Embr Wave won't replace air conditioning in the summer or warm clothes in the winter, and it won't make you feel like you stepped into a freezer on a 90-degree day. That said, many users still find Embr Wave somewhat helpful under more extreme conditions (except still not underwater!)—it just may not feel as effective as it would otherwise. 

Embr Wave has been clinically shown to provide relief for menopausal symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, and insomnia. In a 2019 trial completed in partnership with Johnson & Johnson Innovation, menopausal and perimenopausal women using Embr Wave for 4 weeks experienced significant improvements in hot flash symptoms and insomnia, with participants reporting a 168% improvement in their perceived control over hot flashes. The study also showed that wearing the Wave resulted in a 28% reduction in sleep onset latency (i.e., time it takes to fall asleep) as well as an overall increase in nighttime sleep.

A common misconception about humans and temperature is that our thermal experiences are dictated by our core temperature only.

In reality, studies have shown that even a small localized sensation on your wrist can change your whole body thermosensation and comfort level if you are feeling uncomfortably warm or cold.

Your body has two kinds of thermoreceptors in the skin: one kind senses warmth, the other senses cold.These thermoreceptors send signals to the brain, which translate the thermal stimuli into thermal sensations through the same neural networks that are also responsible for touch, pleasure, thermoregulation, emotion, and the balance of your nervous system.

To personalize your thermal experience, Embr Labs has developed a device called Embr Wave that employs smart algorithms to maximally trigger thermoreceptors in the skin, producing a soothing effect that can also serve as a thermal focal point to which your body can anchor itself and overcome the complexities with which your body usually experiences temperature.

Thermal comfort exists separately from thermoregulation.

Unless you're actually at risk of hypothermia or hyperthermia, it’s likely that your core temperature is already right where it needs to be, at about 98.6 ºF.

Outside of extreme circumstances, thermal comfort isn't about core body temperature but instead depends on your perception of local thermal sensations across your entire body. 

For example, if you've ever felt too hot while in bed and decided to stick one foot out from under the covers or flip your pillow to the cool side, those actions aren't changing your core temperature—that's still going to be around 98.6 ºF. Instead, they're introducing localized temperature sensations that help change the way you feel overall. 

The Wave gives you the power to create these localized sensations on demand, anytime!

Is Embr Wave just a placebo? (Short answer: Nope!)

We know from daily experience that local, transient temperature sensations also have a strong impact on our well-being. For example, we are all familiar with the comfort provided by a warm mug of tea, the relaxing benefits of a trip to a spa, or the energizing effects of a splash of cold water on the face.

In the last decade, the scientific field of neurophysiology has made great progress in making sense of our daily experience by elucidating how thermal sensation affects our thermal comfort, physiology, and emotions.

The findings have been astounding. In particular, recent studies have uncovered specific ways in which local temperature sensations can affect our decision-making, improve our whole-body comfort, influence our experience of social emotions, and influence the balance of our nervous system.

It functions like a mini air conditioner or heater.

Embr Wave uses something called a "thermoelectric module" to warm up or cool down. It's essentially a heat exchanger, and it contains materials that get hot or cold when electricity is passed through them. Depending on the flow of the current, the Wave can get hot or cold. The electricity is generated by a rechargeable Li-ion battery.

Embr Wave was designed to work best when worn on the inside of your wrist (ideally, about an inch away from the hand so that your hand won't touch the top or sides of the Wave when it bends); so it's been optimized and tested for that particular location. 

That said, Embr Labs have heard from customers who wear their Embr Waves in different and creative ways! You are welcome to explore to find out what works best for you. Keep in mind that different parts of the body have different thermal sensitivities, so something that feels just warm on one part of the body might feel too hot in a different spot. For this reason, Ember Labs recommends being careful when trying Embr Wave on other parts of the body for the first time—start out at a lower temperature level and a shorter session, and see how your body reacts before ramping things up or trying longer durations.

The standard Milanese loop band that comes with your Embr Wave adjusts to fit wrists between 135-235 mm (about 5.3-9.25 in) circumference. If that size fits your ankle, for example, feel free to try wearing Embr Wave there to see if you like it.

Embr Wave also uses a standard watch pin, so it's compatible with most styles of watch bands if you'd like to try to find something that's a different size.

It's nothing scary — Embr Wave uses plain old temperature to give you personalized thermal relief!

When Ember Labs talks about "waves of warming or cooling," they are referring to the fact that the Wave sends pulses of warming or cooling in a wave rhythm that ramps up and down according to specifically engineered patterns designed to optimize comfort (and battery life) for a given situation. So, the "waves" being sent to your body are the intermittent pulses of thermal sensation, which are physical sensations generated on the wrist using a thermoelectric cooler.

You could compare these waves to something like an oscillating fan, which is sending waves of cooling to you as it rotates around the room; or to repeatedly touching a cool glass (or warm mug) to your wrist over the course of a few minutes.

Embr Labs engineered their devices around the way humans feel and respond to temperature, taking thermoreceptor sensory physiology into account to provide pleasant sensations of warmth and cold without using a sizeable amount of energy. The reason Embr Labs warm and cool in waves is because the human body responds most significantly to changes in temperature. This allows your brain to keep focusing on the local sensation, bringing your body's thermal focus to your wrist and helping you feel more comfortable overall.

Embr Wave was designed specifically to provide thermal comfort. At this time, it does not offer additional features like a watch or step counter.

You only need to be connected to the app while you're actively using and interacting with the app. You do not have to keep the app open or stay connected to your phone while a cooling or warming session is in progress.
